High Efficiency Multi-chambered Microbial Fuel Cells and Applications

A great deal of water and electricity are used to flush urine in the toilets. We propose a self-power-supplied toilet by employing microbial fuel cells (MFC), which can be used to flush urine and simultaneously generate electricity for the toilets. However, a large number of serially and parallelly connected MCFs are needed to generate sufficient electrical power for flushing. In this project, we improve the efficiency of electric power generation by screening microorganisms, reduce the volume of MFCs by designing their structure (multi-chambered MFC), and then make the self-power-supplied toilet realizable. We create a pioneering design of MFC, the multi-chambered MFC, that can not only reduce the volume of MFC but generate even higher power than traditional ones, which make the self-power-supplied toilet more feasible. In the research, we use Glutamicibacter creatinolyticus as the microorganism in our MFC anode and use artificial urine as the substrate. The power density of the three-chambered MFC is about 4 times higher than that of the traditional MFCs in parallel. The power density of the five-chambered MFC is about 2.5 times higher than that of the three-chambered MFC and 11.5 times higher than that of the traditional MFCs in parallel, which proves that multi-chambered MFCs can generate higher power than traditional ones. We design an MFC device in the urinal, which can generate electricity to offer self-flushing system and can simultaneously reduce the amount of water to treat urine in the toilet. The technology has the potential not only to generate green electrical energy but also make a clean and fresh environment.
