Immersive Technologies in Astrobiology Teaching

Project summary

Immersive technologies have been evolving and influencing the forms of human interaction. In this scenario, the development of Immersive Environments can contribute to education, providing universal access, the development of Scientific Literacy and the skills and competences of BNCC and ENEM. Furthermore, practices of this nature can promote digital literacy, critical thinking and contribute to the development of autonomy. That said, the objective of this project is to develop a High Immersion Environment and verify the potential and challenges of its use in the teaching of Astrobiology. For this, we divided the methodology into three phases. In the first of them, the Pedagogical Approach, we surveyed the concepts of Astrobiology addressed in Basic Education that could serve as a basis for the development of the virtual environment. As a result, we found 28 concepts and 34 skills and competences related to the subject. The second phase was responsible for Environmental Planning. At this moment, we developed a specific document for the design of Immersive Environments, the IDD, based on Game Design Documents (GDD) for games, as well as a specific IDD version for the project. Based on the document, we started the Development Environment (phase 3) on the Unreal Engine engine. As a result, we defined the contents to be covered in the experiment and made the narrative universe: a spaceship and planets with different terrains procedurally generated through the Marching Cubes algorithm and functions that use Perlin Noises, implemented via C++. Furthermore, we developed interaction and locomotion in Virtual Reality in Unreal Blueprints. Later, we created models of an alien and a DNA molecule, developed in the Medium application, and a wrench made in the Blender software. So far, the results show that immersive development is viable and can bring interesting contributions to Science Teaching.
