Brain Walk – Non-invasive brain machine interface system for brain signal classification

Project summary

The present project is the development of a prototype composed of software and hardware to aid in learning the area of ​​brain waves for use in the construction of a prosthesis through a non-invasive brain-machine interface (ICM). ICM is a system that uses electrical signals from the brain and, through a computer, provides an output signal to control external devices. For example, moving cursors on screens or mechanical arms. The number of disabled people in Brazil is increasing every day, today, according to IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) 6,2% of the Brazilian population has some type of disability. According to research by CONCEIÇÃO et. al 72% of the paraplegic people studied have some symptoms of depression and 36,8% had moderate to severe depression. However, with the advancement of technology, there is a greater possibility of building devices that can help in the rehabilitation of paraplegic people or people with mental illnesses, such as lateral sclerosis and people whose motor neurons degenerate, causing partial or total paralysis of the limbs. The purpose of Brain Walk is to develop a low-cost system using a brain-machine interface to prove the ability to use biomedical signals to move a prosthesis. The proposal consisted basically in the integration of two steps: capture and recognition of signals coming from the user's brain and standardization of these signals for use. The methodology required extensive bibliographical research on brain physiology and materials for device construction and software programming. To capture brain activity, electroencephalography (EEG) techniques were used from the ADS1299EEG-FE development kit and with the proper placement of electrodes in the international 10-20 system. To acquire biomedical signs, some requirements are necessary. It is necessary, for example, that the frequencies produced by the brain are not altered, and only amplified their input voltage. For such requirement, one must pay attention to possible distortions coming from the electrical network. For recognition and standardization, a software that is easy to understand and use was proposed. The program receives analog signals converted into digital and already properly amplified with noise correction. And then it will export the obtained signals to a database for understanding and use. If desired, the user can import them in the format of a report. The program was developed in Python language and the MySQL management system was used for storage. Therefore, Brain Walk is based on a set of hardware and software in a system that facilitates the integration and control of a prosthesis. Keywords: paraplegia. neuroscience.
